Ryan Gosling And Brit Marlings’s Names Being Thrown Around For Season Two Of ‘True Detective’

HBO's "True Detective" Season 1 / Director: Cary Fukunaga

VANITY FAIR –

HBO doesn’t have to worry about shooting their upcoming seasons of True Detective around the schedules of their very busy stars. Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey are only appearing in season one of the critically-acclaimed crime drama. Much like FX’s American Horror Story, True Detective is an anthology series. Series creator Nic Pizzolatto explains,

One of the reasons I wanted to do an anthology format is I like stories with endings. I like a good third act. And continuing serial dramas, they tend to have really good beginnings and really long middles and then sort of have to hustle to develop an ending. And I like the idea of telling a self-contained story.

That’s fantastic news for anyone who hates to watch a show they love wear out its welcome and burn through a high concept. Next season of True Detectivewill feature an all-new location and an all-new cast. Pizzolatto also said that even the premise is up in the air,

The title, True Detective, is meant to be, of course, purposefully somewhat generic before you even get to the deeper indications. The word “true” can also mean honorable and authentic and things like that. But all the previous incarnations of anything titled True Detective was an anthology; right? So as long as there is some crime in there, I think the series format can approach it.

Given all the positive attention True Detective has received and the precedent of A-listers like Harrelson and McConaughey in the lead roles, Pizzolatto will have his pick of Hollywood hopefuls when it comes time to cast season two. Here are a few ideas we cooked up to help get him going. Feel free to weigh in with your ideal pairings below.

Ryan Gosling and Brit Marling
Gosling, who was everywhere a few years ago, has quietly retreated from the public eye. What better way to dive back into acting than a juicy, long-form story? As for Marling, well, if TV is good enough for indie darling Greta Gerwig, it’s good enough for Brit. I’d assign these two to Northern California and watch them grapple with the culture clash between the gentle hippie pot farmers and the dangerous criminal element of Humboldt County.

I’m in love, I’m in love and I don’t care who knows it.  Anyone who knows me, knows that I love the Gos, he’s the fucking man.. “He plays the same character every time.. blah blah blah” I don’t care.  If you don’t like the Gos then fuck you.  You don’t like the Notebook? Haven’t seen Crazy Stupid Love? You haven’t lived.  If you don’t want to switch lives with Ryan Gosling, you should give up on life. When I saw that Gosling’s name was suggested in discussion of True Detective’s second season I got a hug broner.

Ok so I know that Vanity Fair isn’t saying that this is set in stone.. they’re merely suggesting duos for next season’s detectives.. but I’ve run with it.. I’ve bought into the hype.  Ryan Gosling and Brit Marling would be fucking perfect.  The Gos would take the torch from Matt McConaughey like a goddamn champ.  Brit Marling is a babe as far as I’m concerned. They’d be great together, maybe a little sexual tension.. Gos has been working towards a detective role his entire career. He was born to pick up where McConaughey left off.

I know the finale was tonight, I’m a couple episodes behind.. time to catch up.
