Michael Sam Is The Biggest Coming Out Story Since Jean Girard Came Out To Nascar (Is The NFL Ready?)

Alright Jeff Garcia, Michael Sam had the balls to come out right before the draft, I think it’s safe to come out of the closet now, bro.

This is the biggest coming out story in sports history since Jean Girard came out to Ricky Bobby and Nascar.

I was going to wait for this Michael Sam story to fizzle down before I commented on it, and I thought it did, but it’s still a breaking news story on ESPN (along with anything LeBron which is a fucking joke).  I wanted to get a feel for the total span of opinion on whether or not a gay football player would be good for the NFL, or whether or not the NFL was even ready for an openly Gay player.. and I’d have to say most of the responses have been totally reasonable.  You have your “Sexual orientation shouldn’t matter if the player helps you win” and you have your “It’s not whether or not the world is ready for people to come out, it’s whether or not an NFL locker room is ready for gay players.”

Teddy Bruschi and many other NFL veterans have taken the easy way out and said it shouldn’t matter, Michael Sam’s a football player and a good one, treat him like anyone else.  But they’re not in the locker room anymore.  What they’re not taking into account is the team chemistry.. the locker room chemistry.  The locker room is a place where players want to be able to say whatever they want, and joke around, and not worry about hurting feelings.  If Michael Sam is going to play in the NFL, I think he has to be upfront about his expectations, and to be honest, he has to tell his team that it’s business as usual.  Talk like you usually do, continue the camaraderie, and don’t worry about editing yourself.  NFL players are creatures of habit.. if the locker room has to change drastically to accept this one player.. players aren’t going to play well, you’re losing chemistry, and you’re losing it fast.  Drafting Michael Sam is going to be a huge gamble.

Here’s an anecdote: I was in the shower at school, and when I got out, I was standing nude right next to an openly gay guy.  I’m in full support of homosexuals everywhere, it’s their life, their choice, but I still felt a little uncomfortable.

Now, is Michael Sam a great defensive player? Yes. He was the SEC Defensive Player of the Year.  You want this guy on your team.  He will help you win. He’s big, he’s fast, and he’s powerful.

There are only a few places where drafting him would make sense. The one team the comes to mind is the Pats. The Patriots need a pass rusher, and honestly I think they’re the best fit team for Sam. Belichik came out and said the Pats were ready for him, they have the best leadership on both sides of the ball, a great and progressive front office, and are a totally welcoming team, in a state that is pro gay rights.  If he can help us win, which I think he can, I’m all for it.

But if Michael Sam is the Jackie Robinson of gay, we can expect players to be hugging instead of tackling and asking other players how their mothers are doing and players being all soft in a matter of 30 or 40 years.  Can’t wait to see how this ends out.
