D’Antoni Says “Discouraged” Lakers Fans Should Choose Another Team To Root For
HUFF POST- The Lakers lost another game by double-digit margins, experienced never-ending injuries and offered non-existent offense. But Lakers coach Mike D’Antoni scoffed at any mention that the Lakers’ struggles prompted their fans to feel discouraged.
“If they’re discouraged, then find another team to root for,” D’Antoni said in an agitated tone after the Lakers’ 117-90 loss Monday to the Phoenix Suns at U.S. Airways Center. “We’re not going to give up. Are you kidding me? Discouraged? That’s not even fair to these guys.”
Plenty of Laker fans expressed on Twitter and in the comments section of Lakers-related articles that D’Antoni’s comments weren’t fair to them, either. But following Tuesday’s practice, D’Antoni apologized and called himself a name plenty of Laker fans had done already.
“I was an idiot last night. I was out of my mind,” D’Antoni said Tuesday in preparation for the Christmas Day game between the Lakers (13-15) against the Miami Heat (21-6) at Staples Center. “I was ticked off. We didn’t play well. I thought it was a game we could’ve won and we didn’t do it. So I said some stuff. That’s me. I just made a mistake.”
Instead of telling Laker fans to root for another team, D’Antoni has now asked for them to stay.
“To me, the meaning is this: We have a team that needs to overachieve, we have a lot of injuries and we’re in a tough state right now,” D’Antoni said. “We need everybody to be pulling with us. It’s going to take a whole village to get this done. I just said it wrong. It came out wrong because I was agitated. I apologize and we’ll move on. We need everybody to be behind these guys. They’re going to play as hard as they can play.”
Let me start by saying the only Lakers fan I respect is Jack Nicholson. I only say that because I’ve seen A Few Good Men, I’ve seen The Departed, I’ve seen The Shining Jack Nicholson has the potential to be crazy behind that calm, cool and collected demeanor he puts on at Lakers games, definitely not someone you fuck with. Definitely want to be on Jack’s good side. That being said, Lakers fans are spoiled. The Lakers fans have seen 5 championships since the 1999-2000 season. They’re 3 games under .500.. they’ve lost 7 of their last 10, but have beaten the teams they are absolutely expected to.. the Bobcats, the Grizzlies, and the Timberwolves.. and they’ve lost games to teams much better then them or games which could have gone either way. NEWSFLASH: This team was built around Kobe.. Kobe’s knee just blew up.. he’s out again.. he hasn’t really been with the team all year. You guys aren’t going to the NBA Finals without him or any of the other injuries (Jordan Farmar, Steve Blake) plaguing this Lakers team.
So when an agitated Mike D’Antoni says, “If they’re discouraged, then find another team to root for,” and I’ll translate: “Hey all you fans who aren’t rooting for us when we go down 5 points in the fourth because your ‘discouraged’ or are feeling ‘discouraged’ after we lose to the Warriors, the Heat, or the Suns without Kobe, you’re pretty much pussies.. go root for the Clippers.. and gtfo,” I have no problem. Because if you’re a true Lakers fan.. you know that they’re struggling right now.. you have to rally behind them.. show your support. Nobody likes playing in front of a bunch of entitled fans.
You know what really grinds my gears though? D’Antoni apologized the second twitter went ablaze with Lakers fans calling him out left and right. Mike, you didn’t need to apologize.. they misunderstood you bro. They thought you were saying “Hey guys, it’s time to root for another team, because we suck..” No. That’s not what you were saying. Stick to your guns one time for me D’Antoni! They lit a fire beneath you.. and you said “That’s it, all the fake ass Lakers fans can leave the building.. I only want the real ones!” No need to be soft.. no need to apologize.. these fans can smell fear, don’t give them shit Mike.
